We are not sure of Alfred's origins. Clarke puts a fair amount of trust in him and he was working for Clarke for wages. (See also references to him in February 1865). He left Little Omaha in September 1865 for the Hokitika Gold Fields.

Charles Clarke became friendly with the family and always referred to the two girls by using Mrs Simpsons married surname (ie 'Simpson') in preference to the girls birth name of Davey. It is not known why he chose to do this but it may be to preserve the niceties of the family structure and deter unwanted questioning.

John (the elder) WYATT (born 1818)
John Wyatt the elder. Arrived in NZ on the Queen of Beauty with Charles Clarke. In Clarkes early diaries he refers to John Wyatt with the title 'Mr'. In later years John Wyatt became known as John the elder to distinguish him from his son, who was then known as 'John the younger'. Clark, however, continued using the title 'Mr Wyatt' in his diaries right up to John Wyatts death.
