April 1928

Sunday 1st   It was a fine day.  Mrs Simpson came to stay a few days .  There was no service here to day .  I went down to Pats in the evening to take a library book and have a yarn.

Monday 2nd   It was a very fine day.  I sent my Bank Book to Auckland to have interest added.  Hector was working at Birdsalls.

Tuesday 3rd   It was a fine day.  I wrote a letter to Willie congratulating him on on his birthday which is on Thursday (5th), this will be posted tomorrow.

Wednesday 4th   It threatened for rain , but we did not get any during the day, but there was a slight shower in the evening.
Mrs H. Torkington came in the afternoon to take her mother (Mrs Simpson) to her place in the service car.

Thursday 5th   It was a very fine day.  I picked some Apple Cucumbers, these were sown on the 23rd of January.  Pat went to Auckland this afternoon in his brother Willies car, they are going to play cricket tomorrow Rodney  V  Suburban.  Dolly went to A. Dunnings at Leigh today , so Jean came home.  The mail came to day as tomorrow is Good Friday, so we got our newspapers.

Friday 6th   Good Friday.  It was a fine day.  We had a picnic at the Domain,  Mabel and the Wilsons joined up, we had lunch & tea under the totara tree.   The men folk played bowls.  Mr & Mrs Wallace, Laurence & Alma,  Ken,  Tilley & Gertie came in two cars in the afternoon.  There were two parties camping on the domain.

Saturday 7th   It was a very fine day.  Hector went to the sports at Warkworth in Tom Ashtons lorry.  Jane, Jean & Mildred went to a picnic at Ti Point with the Wallaces.  Jim & I were the only ones at home for lunch.  Jim played bowls in the afternoon.  I started to trench the piece of ground I intend for onion plants.

Sunday 8th   Easter Day.  Revd Yule, the new Presbyterian Minister held service in the morning, I attended, there was a fair congregation.  Col         In the afternoon I went in Revd Hart’s car to Leigh for the afternoon service,  Mr Hart (the Vicar) officiated,  there was a large congregation,  Collection 28/ s
As Harry Ashton is at the Helensville springs Mabel and Charlie were here for dinner.

Monday 9th    Easter Monday and a general holiday,  Jim,  Jane,  Jean & Mildred went to Warkworth in Tom Ashton’s lorry, as 8 of our local bowlers went to play a game with Warkworth bowlers.  Hector & I staid at home.  I continued trenching the piece of ground I started on Saturday.

Tuesday 10th   It rained heavily at 4 am and continued several hours.  It cleared up in the morning and was very fine in the afternoon, the rain has done a lot of good, it has sunk deep into the ground.  I finished trenching the piece of ground I started last Saturday.

Wednesday 11th   It was a fine day.  Jim & Hector were getting firewood .  I sowed a long row of Canadian Wonder Beans.

Thursday 12th   It rained slightly in the early morning, but cleared up,  I earthed up and dug between the beans.  I went to Whitakers in the afternoon where I am always made welcome.

Friday 13th   It did not rain, but the weather is unsettled.  I cleaned the onion seed.  There was a dance in Leigh in aid of the Plunket Society,  Jane & Jim went in Laddie Whitaker’s car.

Saturday 14th   It was fine with the exception of a rather heavy shower in the afternoon .  Mrs Wallace and Alma called in the afternoon while the men folk went to play bowls.

Sunday 15th   No service here to day.  Weather threatening.  Spent a quiet day reading, and I wrote a letter to Mr Birss.

Monday 16th   It was showery and blowing hard all day.  I was not able to do anything outside.  Posted letters to Mr Elliott and Mr Birss.

Tuesday 17th   It was a very fine day.  Hector was working at Birdsalls.  I dug over the land I intend for onions.  Heard that Mr Pratt had died in Auckland and was going to be buried at Pakiri tomorrow.

Wednesday 18th   It was a fine day.  Hector was working at Birdsalls. Jane & Jean went to Big Omaha to spend the day with Mrs Wallace & Alma.  Jim went to Mr Pratt’s funeral at Pakiri in Mr Hart’s car.
I formed the onion bround into beds.

Thursday 19th   It was a fine day.  Hector was working at Birdsalls.
I was working at the onion beds and sowed 10 rows of Brown Spanish Onions in the afternoon.  Jane went to Whitakers in the afternoon.

Friday 20th   It was a fine day.  I was manuring the onion bed. Jim went to Leigh with Pat.  In the evening I received a letter from Mr Elliott containing a Cheque for £9 . 10 . 0 .

Saturday 21st   The weather in the morning was very threatening, several slight showers fell.  The Warkworth bowlers were expected to come to play a match with our bowlers, but on account of the weather it was uncertain whether they would come, the ladies had prepared to entertain them, however about 11 o  [oclock]  we saw the bus with the bowlers passing, so we went down to the domain. The names of the bowlers was as follows.  Messrs  E. Morrison,
G. Civil,  Pettit,  Duke,  T. Ashton,  T. Williams,  &  H. B. Moore and
J. Wilson.    Mesdames T. Williams & Moore accompanied the bowlers, the weather cleared up and it was a fine afternoon.  One Warkworth set one  [sic: won]  and one Omaha set won.
Mr G. H. Phillips & family came in a car in the afternoon , and the ladies entertained all comers to lunch and tea in the hall.

Sunday 22nd   The weather was also threatening this morning with slight showers, but it cleared up.  Revd Hart held service in the morning, there was only 11 present,  Collection 7/8.  Mr Hart and Mr Malcolm were here for dinner.

Monday 23rd   It was a fine day.  I was preparing the second bed for onions.  I sent the £9 . 10 . 0  cheque I received from Mr Elliott to the Leigh Post Office to be placed to my credit in the bank.  Also sent Mr Elliott a receipt for the cheque.

Tuesday 24th   There were several light showers, but it did not interfere with my work in the garden.  I finished preparing the onion bed.  Jane went to spend the day at Stewarts.

Wednesday 25th   Anzac Day.  And a general holiday.  There was a combined service in the Town Hall at Warkworth.  Mr & Mrs Stewart drove over to spend the day.  Hector was working at Birdsalls.  I was working in the flower garden.

Thursday 26th   It was a fine day, but the weather was threatening .  Hector was working at Birdsalls.  I was tidying up the flower garden .  Mr Wallace & Alma came to spend the day.  Mr Neeley and Civil [?] Wilson came for me to witness their signature.

Friday 27th   It rained last night and early this morning.  Was copying extracts from my diary.

Saturday 28th   It was a fine day, ‘tho dull.  Hector went to Matakana to play hockey.  Dolly and the children returned home after a long stay at her mothers on the hill (Mrs John Greenwood).

Sunday 29th   A dull day.  No service.  I went down to Pats to change my library books.  I took them some apple cucumbers.  It came on to rain in the evening.

Monday 30th   It rained all day, and a strong wind blowing.  Was not able to do anything outside.  Jane and I sent our bank books to Auckland

The rainfall for April as recorded at Warkworth P. O totaled 6.54 inches.  Rain fell on 12 days.  The heaviest fall was registered on the 29th  (30th) when 2.32 inches was registered.
