July 1918

Monday 1st   There were a few showers, but fine between them.  I was pulling tea tree in the barley paddock both morning and pm.  Willie was repairing his gramaphone.

Tuesday 2nd   There were only a few showers.  I was pulling tea tree in the barley paddock both morning and afternoon.
Willie went fishing and brought home a lot of rock cods and schnappers.
In the afternoon Grace & Lily took a walk down to Mr Glass’ house and got a lot of guavas and called on Mrs Knowles.

Wednesday 3rd   It was a very fine day, but the wind is inclined to come from E.
Willie went to clean out Mr Glass’ house as a likely purchaser is coming down to look at the place.  I was pulling tea tree in the morning and in the afternoon I went down to the steamer.  Mrs A. Greenwood called here in the afternoon.

Thursday 4th   It was a very fine. I was pulling tea tree, Grace, Mrs Simpson & Lily called at Chas Wyatts & Arch Dunnings in pm.

Friday 5th   It was a very fine day.  I was pulling tea tree in the morning, went down to the steamer in the pm. Willie was fixing up the drive, filling up the ruts.  Mr Torkington came for tea and all of us went down to the Hall in the evening to a farewell to Keith Matheson.  Ted Gravatt & Andy Biorklund of Pakiri were also present, there was a big crowd and we spent a very pleasant evening, dancing, card playing, songs, recitations &c.   Revd Chartoris gave a very amusing description of Scottish customs and manners, and his two little boys dressed in highland costume danced a highland fling and the sword dance.  Mr Torkington returned with us and staid the night.

Saturday 6th It was a fine day, but cold.
We got up early as Lily and George were leaving today by the “Kawau” at 8 am.  Willie drove them down to the wharf , Grace and I also went down to see them off.  Keith Matheson, Ted Gravatt & Andy Biorklund also left to return to camp as this is their final leave, a crowd of people were down to see them off and give them a cheer.
Willie was working at the drive.  In the afternoon I was pulling tea tree in barley paddock.  Flo’ and Edith came in the pm and staid the night.

Sunday 7th The weather looked very unpromising last night, but the wind changed to the SW and so it was very fine to day.
Revd  Orchard (Methodist) conducted service in the Hall in the afternoon and preached a splendid sermon, all of us with the exception of Willie went, Flo’ and Edith returned home after service.

Monday 8th Only a few slight showers otherwise it was a fine day. Willie was working at the drive.
I was pulling tea tree both morning & afternoon.

Tuesday 9th It was a showery day, I did no work outside, but employed my time in writing ‘Records of events in the early days of the Omaha district’.  Willie did a little work on the drive. Grace went down to the Hall to superintend the scripture exam for the Sunday school union.

Wednesday 10th  Showery early in the morning, fine during the day. In the morning I was pulling tea tree.  Willie was working at the drive.  In the afternoon Willie took the sulky down to the wharf with a box of Eggs, I also went down to the steamer.  I received a bundle of 6 new Roses from Lippiatt which I plunged  in the ground .  Willie had the horse shod, Jim Connell the blacksmith has been called up in the ballot and has passed, so he has got a man to take over his business during his absence, the new man was over to day and Connell was introducing him to customers.
In the evening there was to have been a meeting of the Mutual Improvement Society so Willie, Grace & I went down, but so few turned up that the debate was adjourned to next Wednesday, so Miss C. A. Matheson, Mrs Knowles, Jessie Wyatt and Harold Knaggs came up here for some music.  Harold, Mrs Simpson & I played a game of three handed Five Hundred.

 

Thursday 11th It was fine in the morning, but showery in the afternoon.  In the morning I was pulling tea tree, in the pm I went round getting signatures to the petition about Cemetery Trustees.

Friday 12th   It was a fine day and the ground is drying up.  I was pulling tea tree both morning and afternoon.  Willie was fixing up the drive.  Mrs Knowles brought our mail that came this evening.

Saturday 13th   It was a fine day.  Grace was confined to her bed with a bad throat.  In the morning I pulled tea tree & in the afternoon I took flowers down to the Church.

Sunday 14th   It was a fine day ‘tho dull.   Revd Macdonald conducted service in the Church at 2.30 pm, Willie & I attended, there were only 21 present. Collection 11/- .  It rained in the evening.

Monday 15th   It was showery all day.  I was not able to do anything outside.  Willie was making a wooden horn for his gramaphone.
Grace was still in bed with a bad throat.

Tuesday 16th   It was fine in the morning, but very showery in the afternoon.  In the morning I was pulling tea tree in the barley paddock,  in the pm I went down to the church to take measure of the window that is broken so as to get a new pane.   Jim Wyatt came in the evening to get some bread as his mother and sister are in Auckland.

Wednesday 17th   It was a showery day. I went down to the village in the afternoon but as the steamer was late in coming I did not wait, but Mrs Knowles brought our mail up.

Thursday 18th   Although there were several rainbows in the morning it turned out a fairly fine day, only a few slight showers.
I was pulling tea tree both morning & afternoon.  Willie cut firewood and fixed up the gate near the sulky shed.  Willie went down for the mail in the evening

Friday 19th   It was a fine day ‘tho windy, but the ground is drying up.
I was pulling tea tree in the barley paddock both morning and afternoon.
Willie was fixing a latch to the gate near the sulky shed.  The Steamer made a very quick trip from Auckland today, under 5 hours.  Willie went down and got the mail.

Saturday 20th   There were several showers, but not very heavy ones.  I was pulling tea tree in the barley paddock both morning and afternoon.  In the pm I took flowers down to the church.

Sunday 21st   It was a showery day & very cold. I conducted service in the church in the afternoon. On account of the weather there were only 8 present, the offeratory was 5/- . John Wyatt died at John Salts at Pakiri

Monday 22nd   It was a very cold showery day.  Willie has influenza and was sitting by the fire all day,  I did not do anything outside but shelled and cleaned Pale Dun and Canadian Wonder Beans.

Tuesday 23rd   It was a beautiful and calm morning and the sun shone out warm.
Willie was a little better and got up and milked the cows.  After breakfast Jim Wyatt came and told us that his grandfather & my brother in law John Wyatt had died last Sunday night at John Salts, Pakiri, and that he was to be buried in this cemetery this afternoon at 2 oclock.  I got firewood and Grace made a wreath.  The funeral was at 2 pm , there were a good few present considering the weather and the sickness that is prevalent.  I tolled the church bell and Revd Macdonald conducted the service at the grave.  There was a very  [big]  hail storm about noon, the heaviest I have ever experienced, it filled the gutters of our house and Willie had to get up and shovel it off.  It was very fine and bright for the funeral in the afternoon.

Wednesday 24th   There was a heavy frost this morning and very cold, but it proved a very fine day, sunny and calm.
In the morning I pulled tea tree and in the afternoon I went down to the steamer, and got the mail, a great many people are laid up with colds and influenza.

Thursday 25th   It was a very fine day.  I was pulling tea tree both morning & afternoon.  Willie was making a gate near the pigsty.
I went for the mail in the evening.

Friday 26th   There was a heavy frost this morning .  Willie continued making the gate.  I made another manure heap the upper side of the house, and took up all the Dahlias & labeled them.  Went down to  meet the steamer in the afternoon.  Mr Woods sent the glass for the Church window.

Saturday 27th   It was a fine day.  In the morning I went down to the village to post some letters, called in to the Church to unpack the glass for the window that came yesterday, called at Dunnings to see the war news, and on my way home I cleared a track for a short cut.
Willie finished the gate near the pig sty.

Sunday 28th   It was a fine day, but dull and a cold wind was blowing.
Revd Gould held service in the hall in the morning.  Mrs Simpson and I attended, there was a small congregation as so many are laid up with colds.  Mrs Simpson had dinner at Arch Dunnings.  I took a walk up to Willie Dunnings in the afternoon and staid tea.

Monday 29th   It rained all last night & early this morning, it cleared up in the pm. but the wind was piercing cold from the S.
Willie got up to milk the cows but went to bed again as his cold is very bad.  I did not do anything outside, but employed myself in mending in my room with a good fire.

Tuesday 30th   It was a fine day, but cold in the shade.  Willie was a little better, so he got up and remained up all day.  I got firewood for the kitchen and also logs for the dining room & my bedroom fires, also opened two kerosene cans and put handles to them.  Irene Dunning came in the afternoon and Mr & Mrs A. Dunning and Victor Smith came in the evening, we had phonograph selections & cards and had a very pleasant evening.

Wednesday 31st   It was very fine in the morning, I went down to the barley paddock & pulled tea tree.  In the afternoon I went down to the village, the steamer was late coming in, and as it came on to rain I did not wait to get the mail.
Ernest Wyatt got his Oats drilled in to day in the paddock near the Hall, he has been interrupted in getting his Oats in in this paddock and the one opposite Gravatts by the wet weather.
