July 1917

Sunday 1st   It was a beautiful day.   Rev Boyle conducted service in the Hall in the morning and preached a very good sermon, there was a fair congregation.  I attended.
In the afternoon I walked up to W.  Dunnings staid for tea & spent a very pleasant evening.

Monday 2nd   It was fine in the morning but a few showers in the afternoon.  Willie was sacking up his charcoal.  I was pulling up tea tree the other side of the hill.
Jessie Wyatt & Jessie Matheson came to play with Redmond and staid for tea.

Tuesday 3rd   It was a fine day.
Willie was working at the charcoal in the morning and in the afternoon he & Grace went fishing down to the wharf, but they only caught a few sprats, Willie hauled down his clothes props & some bedding I am sending Minnie and Jane.

Wednesday 4th   It was a fine day.  Wind from NW.  Willie hauled the bedsteds & bedding down to the wharf that I am sending to Minne & Jane.
I went down to meet the steamer, it was the “Kotiti” and she did not arrive until 5 pm taking 7 hours to do the trip.  Mr Glass came up by her bringing sacks for the charcoal and Willie took the sulky down and brought them up.  I wrote a letter to Mr Wallace and posted it this afternoon.

Thursday 5th   A very showery day.  Willie and Dave were sacking up their charcoal.  I only got a load of wood and staid in the house mending clothes.

Friday 6th    It was a fine day.
Willie & Dave carted their charcoal down to the wharf.  I got several loads of wood.  Went down to the village in the morning to get the mail.  In the evening there was a Roll of Honour dance in the Hall in the evening.  I went and was playing Five Hundred all evening.
It rained very heavy while we were in the Hall.

Saturday 7th   It was a fine day.
Willie went down to the wharf in the morning to send away the charcoal (57 sacks) he staid down there fishing but only brought home a few small ones.
I was the other side of the hill, pulling up tea tree and carrying home firewood.  It rained in the evening.

Sunday 8th   There were two showers during the day, otherwise it was fine between.  Revd Southern conducted service in the the Hall in the afternoon, I attended, afterwards I went up to Charlie Wyatts for tea, they showed me a lot of photos & curios that Eddie had sent from Egypt.

Monday 9th   It was a fine day.  Willie & Dave were cutting wood for another charcoal Kiln.
I was working the other side of the hill pulling tea tree and carrying wood off to cut up into firewood.

Tuesday 10th   It was very fine in the morning.  I was pulling tea tree the other side of the hill.
Willie & Dave were cutting tea tree for their charcoal Kiln.
There was a scripture exam in the Hall in the afternoon of 6 pupils of the Bible Class under the auspices of the Auckland Sunday School Union.  Grace was the                  [blank to end of line]
It came on to rain late in the afternoon and kept on all evening.

Wednesday 11th   It was a fine day. I was cutting firewood in the morning, in the afternoon I went down to the village to get some meat.
Willie was breaking stone out of the hill and carrying it down to put in the back yard.

Thursday 12th   It was a fine day.
Willie was getting stone out of the hill.  I was cutting firewood the other side of the hill.  In the evening I went down for the mail  & changed my library books.

Friday 13th   Willie went fishing with Dave down at Goat Island beach,  Grace went down to Mrs Glass in the afternoon & she & Willie came home late in the evening with some fish.  I was cutting firewood in the morning and in the afternoon, I was getting rose cuttings to send to Mrs Halliwell.

Saturday 14th   The wind has changed round to the NE, and a sea is getting up.  In the morning I packed cuttings of 20 varieties of roses and posted them to Mrs Halliwell of Te Araroa, also wrote her a letter and posted it at the same time.  Grace went down to sweep & dust the church and arrange flowers on the altar.  I carried two loads of wood from over the hill.  Willie and Dave were cutting wood for another Kiln.

Sunday 15th   It rained steadily all day.   Revd Macdonald should have held service in the Church in the afternoon, but on account of the weather none of us went out.

Monday 16th   It was a fine day.  Willie and Dave were hauling out wood and building another Kiln.
In the morning I went down to the village to take the Key out of the church door that Grace had left in on Saturday.  In the afternoon I went over the hill for a load of firewood and was mending clothes.

Tuesday 17th   It was a very fine day.  Willie & Dave were building their Kiln.  I was pulling tea tree the other side of the hill both morning & afternoon.

Wednesday 18th   In rained first thing in the morning but cleared up after.  In the morning Willie and Dave went fishing to goat island beach.
I received a wire from Jack that he had been drawn in the ballot and that he and Lily were coming home and that he would advise me later.  I went down to the steamer in the pm.

Thursday 19th   It was fine in the morning.  Willie and Dave were building their Kiln.  I was pulling up ti tree the other side of the hill and carried a load of firewood home.
It came on to rain in the afternoon & Willie had to Knock off  &  it was too wet for me to go down for the mail in the evening.

Friday 20th   It rained all day.  A strong wind blowing.  In the morning Willie & I shelled a lot of beans.

Saturday 21st   It was a fine day.  Willie & Dave were building their Kiln.  In the morning I was pulling up tea tree the other site of the hill & brought a load of firewood home.
In the afternoon I got another load of firewood and took some flowers down to the Church.

Sunday 22nd   It rained heavily last night but it was very fine this morning, there was a heavy shower in the afternoon just before church time, I conducted service in the Church in the afternoon. There were 26 present, Collection 8/3.

Monday 23rd   It was very fine in the morning, but there was rather a heavy shower in the afternoon.  Willie & Dave were building their charcoal kiln.
I was pulling tea tree the other side of the hill both morning and afternoon.

Tuesday 24th   It was very fine in the morning, but showery in the afternoon.  Willie and Dave were making their Kiln. I was pulling tea tree & carried home wood.

Wednesday 25th   It was a very fine day.  Willie and Dave were building their Kiln.  In the morning I was pulling tea tree.  I wrote a letter to Joe Greenwood also sent him a Rodney Times.  Went down to the Steamer in the afternoon.

Thursday 26th   It was a fine day.   In the morning I went the other side of the hill to pull tea tree, carried home firewood.
In the afternoon I went down to the steamer to get the meat that was sent from Matakana.  In the evening I went down for the mail & changed by books at the Library.

Friday 27th   It was a showery day.  In the morning and afternoon I went to the other side of the hill to get wood.

Saturday 28th   It was   [?]   in the morning. I went down to the village to post letters and get some things at the store.
In the afternoon I walked over to the Claim to Jim’s place and staid the night, I found the roads very muddy.

Sunday 29th   It was a fine day.  Revd Boyle conducted service in the Claim Hall in the afternoon, all of us went, there were only 9 present and 5 of them were from Jim’s house.  Collection 3/2.

Monday 30th   There were a few slight showers, otherwise it was a fine day.  In the morning I walked across the beach to Ti Point, had dinner at Joe’s place and then walked home in the afternoon.  Willie lit his charcoal Kiln this evening.

Tuesday 31st   It was a beautiful day.  Without any rain.
I was cutting firewood all day the other side of the hill.
