May 1905

Monday 1st   It was a showery day.  I was pulling up some tea tree in the front in the morning, but had to come home on account of the weather.  In the afternoon I went down to the wharf to meet the “Gael” which called in on her way to Mangawai.  Willie returned from Ti Point in the evening.

Tuesday 2nd   It was a fine day.  We got all the Sheep up from the farm, we killed a big wether in the afternoon .
Jane went round to Ti Point in the “Kawau“.  Willie & I picked 4 Cases of Apples in the afternoon.

Wednesday 3rd   It was a fine day.  Jane returned from Ti Point in the “Kawau” in the morning.  Willie took the mutton out.  We hauled the 11 Cases of Apples down to the wharf in the pm, and hauled up a Sack of Maize that came up by the “Gael” also 8 flooring boards that Charlie ordered for me.

Thursday 4th   It was a fine day.  Wille went over to Ti Point.  I cleared out part of the loft upstairs and put the floor boards up there to season, also some other board to keep them out of the weather.  In the afternoon I was cutting tea tree in the front.

Friday 5th   It was a fine day.  The 42nd Anniversary of the “Queen of Beauty” leaving Gravesend for New Zealand.
We were cutting and pulling up tea tree in the front.  Willie took the bullock down to the wharf in the afternoon, and hauled up a Sack of Maize that came on the “Gael” on Wednesday.

Saturday 6th   It was a very fine day.  After doing odd jobs I rode over to Pakiri to witness a Tennis Match Pakiri vs Kia Ora,  the former club beat.  The ladies provided tea which was laid in the Hall in the evening, there was a dance and supper, the Hall was nicely filled and the young people seemed to be enjoying themselves.  I was playing cards all the evening on the stage.  I went home with Mr & Mrs Ellis Dyer to stay the night.

Sunday 7th   It was a fine day tho’ very dull, I found it much colder at Pakiri than at Omaha.  After breakfast Ellis took me to have a look round the place. He has 6 acres of Maize growing which seems as if it would yield a heavy crop  – the cobs being very large.  After dinner I rode home, Willie had gone to Ti Point but returned in the evening.

Monday 8th   It was a fine day.  Willie and I picked the Maggs’ Seedling Apples in the farm orchard and put them on the boards in the loft.
In the afternoon Jane rode to Matakana to be present at a Wedding Social given by Mr Robert Williams to celebrate his marriage.

Tuesday 9th   It was a beautiful day.  Willie & I were picking Ohinemuri Apples.  I went down to the Village to post a letter, also went to the wharf, found that the “Gael” had landed some fruit cases and goods from Dumpers for me this morning, so after dinner Willie took the bullock down to the wharf and hauled up a box of Groceries, a Case of Kerosene, and 15 fruit Cases.

Wednesday 10th   It was a fine day.  Willie & I packed 9 long Cases of Ohinemuri,  &  5 long Cases Golden Russets, hauled them down to the wharf in the afternoon also a Crate  (14)  fowls.  Hauled up 21 empty cases.
Willie caught some bait at the wharf and after tea he went to Ti Point to fish.  Jane returned from Matakana in the afternoon.

Thursday 11th   It was a very dull morning.  I went round in the “Gael” to Big Omaha, we went to the upper wharf first where we discharged some timber for David Darroch.  I got off at the lower wharf.  Willie put 5 bundles of fish on board .  Willie & I went up to Minnies for dinner and I afterwards walked home.
In the afternoon I was burning in the front.  It came on to rain in the evening.

Friday 12th   It was showery in the morning, but was a little finer in the afternoon.
Willie & i were picking and packing Apples ( Kentucky Red Streak ), I went to the P.O  & Library in the evening, Mr Boyd was not over so I looked after the Library.

Saturday 13th   It was a fine day.  In the morning I carried a Case of Apples down to the wharf.  Willie & I picked the remainder of the Kentucky Red Streak Apples.
In the afternoon Willie & I went down to the wharf to meet the “Gael” coming from Mangawai, it was about 4 oclock when she came in, Willie went up in her to Auckland for a holiday, he took a case of Apples each for Mrs Wallace  &  Mrs Simpson.

Sunday 14th   It was a fine day.  There were some rain-bows in the sky in the morning and I thought it was going to be a showery day, there were a few in the morning, but otherwise it was a very fine day.
I rode over to Mr Birdsalls where I had dinner.  Called at Mr Whitakers, but found no one at home, also called at Mr Jas Darroch.

Monday 15th   It was a fine day.  In the morning I was cutting some tea tree at the bottom of the barley paddock.  In the afternoon hauled 11 Cases of Apples down to the wharf, and brought up 3 lemon cases I got from A. Haskell.  Went down to the Village in the evening to post some letters.

Tuesday 16th   It was a fine day.  In the morning I was pulling and cutting tea tree in the front, and in the afternoon I was burning in the front.  Jane went down to the Store just before dark to change a pair of boots, she heard there that Cruickshank’s Store at the Claim was burned down last night.

Wednesday 17th   There were a few showers during the day, which made the road very slippery.
I took the bullock down to the wharf in the morning with 13 Cases of Apples and hauled up some gravel for the gateway.  I was pulling some tea tree.  Jane went to Mrs Albert Wyatts to do some sewing.
I went down to meet the “Gael“, she did not get in until 5 pm.
Willie Dunning came to spend the evening.

Thursday 18th   It was very dull in the morning, but it turned out a fine day.  In the morning I went down the Valley to witness the signatures of the Mrs Knaggs & Alec McKenzie .  I had lunch at Mr G. Knaggs,   afterwards I went with Mr T. Knaggs to his orchard to see some Apples he thinks very highly of, namely “Doerty”  and  “Yates”, he gave me one of each to bring home.
I was pulling and burning tea tree in the front.
Jane went up to Miss Gallies to do some sewing.

Friday 19th   It was a fine day.  Jane went down to Mrs J. C. Wyatts and spent the day.  I was pulling up and burning tea tree in the front.
I went down to the P.O. and attended to the Library in the evening.

Saturday 20th   It was a fine day.  I was pulling up tea tree and burning in the front all day.  Ernest Wyatt came to spend the evening.  In the evening I attended a meeting of the Trustees of the Public Library.  Mr Handby & Mr Whitaker were present besides myself, we met to choose new books.

Sunday 21st   It was a fine day.  Mr Bacon  (Wesleyan Student) held service in the Hall in the afternoon , I attended and liked the preacher very much.

Monday 22nd   It poured with rain last night and it was very dull and showery this morning, but afterwards it cleared up.
Jane walked to Ti Point in the afternoon to see Mrs H. Torkington.
It was too wet to burn , but I was pulling up tea tree in the front all day.

Tuesday 23rd   It was a fine day.  I was pulling up tea tree in the front.  Jane returned from Ti Point in the afternoon.

Wednesday 24th   Empire Day.  The weather was fine.
I went down to the wharf in the morning to meet the “Kawau” coming from Ti Point.   Minnie and her three children, Flo and her baby and Miss Wallit came round in her and came up to our place. Joe went to Auckland in the “Kawau“.  I was pulling up tea tree in the front the remainder of the day.

Thursday 25th   It rained heavily last night and early this morning.  Minnie, the children, Flo’ and Miss W returned to Ti Point in the “Gael“,  Jane and I went down to the wharf to see them off – also to sell the eggs.  I was pulling up tea tree and burning in the front.

Friday 26th   It was fine in the morning.  I went down to the wharf in the morning to meet the “Gael” as I thought Joe was coming by her, but I heard that he came back this morning by the “Kotiti“, the newspapers came by the “Gael” so I got mine.  I was pulling up tea tree in the front.  It came on to rain in the afternoon and continued until nearly dark.  On account of the weather I did not go down to the P.O or the Library.

Saturday 27th   It was a fine day.  I was pulling up tea tree all day in the front.  There was a meeting in the Hall in the evening to form a football club.

Sunday 28th   It was a dull morning and the grass was very wet with a heavy rain or dew.  I walked over to Ti Point, called at Harolds and then went on to Joes where I had dinner, afterwards I went down to the bay to see Joe’s yacht, on my way home I called in at Mr Torkingtons for a slasher that Willie sent up by Joe.

Monday 29th   It was very dull and threatening rain, but we did not get any.  I was working in the front pulling up tea tree all day.
Miss Wallet walked round here from Ti Point and Jane went down to the wharf in the evening to see her off in the “Kawau” which called in on her way home from Mangawai to Auckland, there were several passengers from here.
The adjourned meeting of householders was held in the School at
7 pm.  I attended, a Committee was appointed consisting of Messrs A. Matheson,  Jos Greenwood,  A. Dunning,  W. Frearson and J. C. Wyatt.

Tuesday 30th   It was a dull day, but we had no rain.
I was pulling up tea tree & burning in the front.
I went down to the P,O. in the afternoon after the arrival of the “Kawau“.

Wednesday 31st   It rained nearly all day.  I was not able to do anything out of doors.  The wind was also blowing very strong from the NE.  The “Gael” did not make her usual trip on account of the weather.
