July 1895

Monday 1st   It was very windy, Willie & I were pulling tea tree, John went up on to the mail road and brought Chloe home who is not far off calving.

Tuesday 2nd   Wind blowing very strong from the SW.  Willie & I were pulling tea tree.   John was cutting tea tree in the front.
The Miss Hardings came up in the Steamer in the evening,  John & Walter helped them up with their things.

Wednesday 3rd   It was a very showery day.  The School commenced after the mid winter holidays.  I finished pulling up the tea tree on the hill behind Mr Wyatts house.  John was cutting tea tree.

Thursday 4th   It was a showery day.  I was cutting tea tree on the farm.  John was cutting tea tree in front.

Friday 5th   It was a very showery day.  John was cutting tea tree in the front.  I was planing up timber in the shed for making a gate.
We killed a Sheep in the evening.  Henry returned from Hoteo in the evening.

Saturday 6th   It was a very showery day.  I took the mutton out in the morning & did odd jobs.  Willie Pratt came home in the evening.

Sunday 7th   The day was rather finer although we had a few showers.  I read service in the Hall in the pm.

Monday 8th   An improvement in the weather, only a few showers. Henry went to Pakiri shooting and Willie Pratt went up the hill to his place.   John was cutting tea tree in front and I was cutting tea tree on the farm.

Tuesday 9th   It was a showery day.  John was cutting tea tree in front.    I was cutting tea tree on the farm.  Henry returned from Pakiri in the evening and took his Pheasants down to the Steamer.

Wednesday 10th   It was a showery day.  Henry returned to Pakiri in the morning.  John took down his horse & I went with him down to the Wharf and packed up  some Groceries that came up by the Steamer last night, they came from  Aleys late  W. Earles.  John went down again and brought up 100lbs Flour from Harpers.
John & I were cutting tea tree in the pm.

Thursday 11th   It was a beautiful day, more like summer weather.
John & I were cutting tea tree.  John went fishing in the evening and caught 3 schnapper.

Friday 12th   It was a showery day.  John & I were cutting tea tree.
Killed a Sheep in the evening.   There was an entertainment in the Dacres Claim Hall in the evening given by Mr & Mrs Alex Meiklejohn in honor of their marriage,  John,  Minnie & Jane went.  Henry returned from Pakiri  in the evening.

Saturday 13th   It was a fine day.  Henry & Jim Dunning went out in a boat to put game on board the “Kawau” to send to Auckland,  they caught 1 Hapuka and several  Schnappers  & Rock Cods.  The Miss Hardings came in the evening to practise the hymns for tomorrow.

Sunday 14th   It was a fine day.  I read service in the Hall in the pm.  Miss Harding played the harmonium in the absence of  Miss Clara Fordham who is in Auckland.   Henry & Jane went up to tea to Miss Hardings.  Fred Savage & Walter Wyatt were here for tea.

Monday 15th   It was a very fine day.  Willie Pratt went up the hill.  Henry went shooting to Pakiri.   Minnie went to Tom Wyatts to be company with Martha while Tom is away.  John was cutting tea tree in front and I was cutting tea tree on the farm.

Tuesday 16th   It was a fine day.  News came by Telephone this morning of the death of Mrs Bond, Mr Dunning’s  sister.  She died in Auckland at the residence of her son in law Norman Matheson where she had been staying  for medical treatment, she was to have been brought down by the “Maori”   today to be buried in the Matakana Cemetry.
Willie & Charlie Pratt came over with the bullocks and took the remainder of their furniture up to their new home, Maud & Horace also went up to take up their residence in their new house.  We shall miss them all very much.
John went up on to the mail road and brought the bullocks home.
I took 3 small Cases Dried Apples down to the wharf to send to Mr A.  Aley, Grocer.   The remainder of the day I was cutting tea tree on the farm.  Henry returned from Pakiri in the evening.

Wednesday 17th   It rained nearly all last night, it was a fine day with the exception of a few showers in the afternoon.
Henry hauled some goods for Mr Harvey in the morning and he hauled 2 tons of firewood for Miss Harding in the afternoon.
I was cutting tea tree on the farm.

Thursday 18th   It rained last night but it was a fine day.  John & Henry were cutting tea tree in the front.  We killed the Pig in the afternoon.

Friday 19th   It was a fine day.  Wind from the S, rather cold.
Henry went shooting.  John was cutting tea tree in the front.
I cut up the Pig, it weighed 184 lbs

So that the Pork cost not quite @  per lb   We have had the Pig for about 4 months and it was 3 months old when we got it, thus it would be about 7 months old when it was killed.

Saturday 20th   It was a fine day.  Henry went up the hill shooting. he called in at Mauds and took her a piece of pork and some brawn.  John was cutting tea tree in the front.  I was doing odd jobs.

Sunday 21st   It was a fine day.  I read service in the Hall in the pm.  The Miss Hardings came here for tea and spent the evening.

Monday 22nd   It was a wet day, I was working at the gate in the shed.

Tuesday 23rd   It was a wet day, I was working at the gate in the shed.

Wednesday 24th   It was a showery day.  The Steamer came in this morning.  Mr H. Rayner came by her, he came up here and had breakfast and dinner.  John hauled some goods for Mr Harvey, also 2 Sacks of Flour for us.  Henry went to Pakiri in the evening.

Thursday 25th   There were a few showers during the day.  John was cutting tea tree in the front.  I was working at the gate in the shed. John and Jane went up to Miss Hardings in the evening.

Friday 26th   It was a fine day.  John was cutting tea tree, he also cut down the Elder trees in the garden.  I was working at the gate in the shed.

Saturday 27th   It was a fine day.  John went up the hill on his horse, he called at Mauds, he then went shooting and brought home 2 pigeons.  Henry returned from Pakiri in the evening.  Willie & I cleared away the elder branches and then we went to Dunnings beach and brought home some flat stones.

Sunday 28th   It rained nearly all day.  There was no service in the pm.  John went down to be beach for dinner.  Henry went to Pakiri in the evening.

Monday 29th  It was a fine day, only a few showers.  John was cutting tea tree in the front.  I was working at the gate in the morning, and cutting tea tree in the pm.

Tuesday 30th   John was cutting tea tree in the front.  I was working at the gate in the shed.  Henry returned from Pakiri in the evening.

Wednesday 31st   It was a fine day.  John & Henry  were cutting tea tree in the front.  I was doing odd jobs and dug around the Macrocarpa trees.
