Thursday 1st It was a fine day. Henry was putting in Posts in the E.R. I went up there in the afternoon & helped as my back is better.
Mrs & Miss Rogers called in the afternoon & staid for tea.
Friday 2nd Henry was putting in Posts in the E.R. It came on the rain in the pm. We killed a Sheep.
Saturday 3rd It was a showery day. Henry went shooting. I was making rollers in the shed. Willie & John returned from Tomarata in the evening.
Sunday 4th It was a fine day. I read service in the Hall in the afternoon, there was a very good congregation. James Greenwood returned home, having served 2 years and 3 months in Mt Eden Jail for embezzlement.
Monday 5th It was a very dull wintry day. Willie & John returned to Tomarata in the morning. Henry went shooting. I was making rollers in the shed.
Tuesday 6th It rained all day. I was reading in the house all day. Henry went shooting.
Wednesday 7th It was blowing very strong from the E.
The Steamer did not go out on account of the weather. There was a great sea out side and also in the harbour. I was burning out the rollers to fit the iron pins I got from A. Warin by the Steamer last night. Henry was shooting.
Thursday 8th The Steamer went out early this morning. It was a very fine day. We were fixing on the wires on the fence between our land and the E.R. Afterwards we put in some posts in the Matheson’s fence.
Friday 9th We were working in the E.R. Henry squared a straining post & a strut and I bored them . It was a fine day.
Saturday 10th I got firewood and cleaned out the calf place, afterwards worked in the E.R. putting in posts in Matheson’s fence. Willie & John came home in the evening, after they came home it poured with rain and thundered & lightened.
Sunday 11th It was a very fine day, but very cold. Read service in the Hall in the afternoon. there were about 35 present.
Monday 12th It was a fine day. Willie & John returned to Tomarata. Henry went shooting. I was working in the E.R. putting a strut to the top straining post next our land. Maud went to Mrs Handbys and then up to Greenwoods to stay.
Tuesday 13th It was a fine day, but was blowing very strong from the SE. Henry & I were working in the E.R. putting in 2 straining posts, one at the division of ours & Savages fence and the other in Matheson’s orchard. The Steamer did not come in.
Wednesday 14th The Steamer came in early in the morning and went out immediately she had landed her cargo. It was a fine day, wind still blowing from SE. Henry & I were working in the E.R. putting in a large straining post at the top corner and also a strut to it and a strut at the lower straining post.
Thursday 15th It was a very fine day, wind still at SE very hot in the middle of the day. We commenced putting the wire on the fence in the E.R.
Friday 16th It was a fine day and still blowing from SE. We continued putting the wire on the fence in the E.R. Maud and the Baby returned from their visit to Greenwoods in the afternoon. We killed a Sheep in the evening and turned out the Wethers which were in the Barley Paddock on to the farm.
Saturday 17th It was a fine day though dull. We were hauling to day with the two pair of bullocks. We hauled 3 loads of Sleepers and 3 loads of Posts down to Matheson’s beach.
Willie & John returned from Tomarata in the evening. John is going to remain at home for a while now to help us.
Sunday 18th It was a very dull day and the wind was blowing very strong. It commenced to rain in the afternoon and rained and blew very heavy during the evening and night. On account of the rain there was no service in the afternoon.
Monday 19th Willie returned to Tomarata in the morning. John remained at home to help us. It was a very fine day. We were working in the E.R. The boys sawed the Kauri tree into two logs and jacked it on to the road out of way of the top fence line, we put in remaining 3 posts and commenced to put on the wire. Mr Savage finished putting on the wire on his half of the fence.
Tuesday 20th It was a showery day. We went up to the fence in the morning but it came on to rain and we had to come home again. I made some rollers in the shed.
In the afternoon it cleared up again and we went up the hill again, the boys crosscutted 4 Kauri logs and we put on the remainder of the wires except the top one.
It came on to rain very heavy again and we got wet going home in the evening. Mr Noton, traveller for Rushbrook was here for tea and spent the evening.
Wednesday 21st It was a fine day with the exception of a few showers in the evening. The boys were crosscutting the Kaihakatea at the top of the E.R. I staple all the wires on the fence.
Jane spent the evening at Miss Wanns and staid all night.
Thursday 22nd It was a fine day. John took the young bullocks to Tomarata to haul his gum down to the Pakiri river. Henry squared the Totara straining post up on the road, after that we were putting in posts in Matheson’s fence.
We measured our share of the dividing fence between Frearsons and us and found it was 17 Chains 32 links. We also measured Mathesons fence that we are fixing up and find it 8 Chains 36 links.
Friday 23rd It was fine in the morning. We took up the coil of plain wire and put on the top wire on the fence next the road, and then we brought down the Totara straining post , we put up the strut to the straining post in Mathesons orchard. It came on to rain and we had to come home, it poured with rain all evening and no one went for the mail or to the Library.
Saturday 24th It was showery in the morning and the ground saturated with water. I got and cut a quantity of firewood. In the afternoon Henry & I went down to the E.R. , we put some barb wire on to Matheson’s fence and drove in some posts in the swamp, it came on to rain so we had to come home. John brought home the young bullocks from Pakiri, he was delayed on account of the wet weather. Willie also returned from Tomarata.
Sunday 25th It was a fine day though dull and cold. I taught Sunday School for Miss Wann, also read service afterwards, there was a small congregation.
I went down to see R. Matheson after Church, he is just recovering from measles. I staid for tea there. Miss Matheson had just returned from Waipu where she had been for some time on a visit.
Monday 26th It was a fine day. John & Willie went round in a boat to Pakiri to bring there Gum round here, they did not return until late at night. Henry & I were working in the E.R. , put in the Gate Post and (The days entry finishes here)
Tuesday 27th The boys got the cattle up that we have outside and tried to take them up on the mail road, but they broke away and as it came on the rain heavily they came home.
I was working in the E.R. putting on some wire, but had to come home on account of the rain. I made some rollers in the shed in the afternoon.
Wednesday 28th The weather was pretty fair, only a few showers. I was fixing on the wire on Mathesons fence and also across the road. The boys were crosscutting post lengths near the Koeroa creek. Willie was digging Gum at Point Rodney.
Thursday 29th Arbor Day. Some trees were planted in the School ground. I was fixing on the wire on Mathesons fence. The boys were splitting Posts for Frearsons fence. Willie was digging Gum on Point Rodney. There were several showers during the day.
Friday 30th The boys were splitting posts. I finished the fence at Mathesons. Willie was digging Gum at PR. It came on to rain in the afternoon and poured all evening.
